Previous LGPS or other public sector membership

If you have paid LGPS contributions into the Clwyd Pension Fund or another LGPS Fund before, we may need to combine that pension membership with your current service. If the LGPS membership is with another Fund, we will not know about it unless you tell us. With that in mind, please:

  • Tell the Clwyd Pension Fund that you have a deferred pension with another LGPS Fund, and give the name of the Fund
  • Tell the other LGPS Fund that you have started to pay LGPS contributions again with the Clwyd Pension Fund

You need to do this so that you receive the correct options about combining your LGPS benefits.

If less than 5 years have passed between you leaving your last LGPS Fund and joining the Clwyd Pension Fund, you will be able to keep any final salary link, even if you choose to transfer it. In other words, your pension from the last Fund will still be based on final salary scheme rules, despite the break in your service.

However, if more than 5 years have passed, the final salary link will be broken if you transfer, and the pension would be based on career average revalued earnings, or CARE. You may not be able to transfer your previous LGPS membership into the Clwyd Pension Fund.

You will also need to tell the Clwyd Pension Fund if you were in another public sector pension scheme before, even if you received a refund of contributions. We will not know about that service otherwise.

Public sector schemes include:

  • Civil Servants
  • The Judiciary
  • Armed Forces
  • Local Government workers
  • Teachers
  • Health Service Workers
  • Fire & Rescue
  • Police Forces

The same treatment of the final salary link, based on whether more or less than 5 years have passed since your last membership, applies here in the same way as above, for past LGPS service.

You must arrange any transfers into the Clwyd Pension Fund within 12 months of joining us, unless your employer agrees to extend this deadline.
